 Attention,
research community!

On 24 April 2025, the long-awaited calls for the European Union's LIFE Programme for 2025 opened.

With an impressive strong>€600 million, this is an exceptional opportunity for innovative projects in environment and climate action to get the funding they need to become a reality and contribute to a more sustainable future for Europe.

The launch coincides with the #ForOurPlanet campaign, highlighting the right time to transform ideas into concrete actions for the good of the planet.

What Exactly is the LIFE Programme (A Quick Reminder)?

For those unfamiliar, the LIFE Programme is not a new initiative. In fact, it has been "bringing green ideas to life" since 1992.

Managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), LIFE is the EU's funding instrument exclusively dedicated to environment and climate action. Its main objective is to contribute to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental and climate policy and legislation by co-financing projects with European added value.

For the period 2021-2027, the programme has a reinforced budget of EUR 5.4 billion and is structured in four main sub-programmes, designed to cover the key pillars of EU environment and climate policy and to help applicants identify the most appropriate funding line:

  • Nature and Biodiversity: Focused on protecting and restoring Europe's nature, halting and reversing biodiversity loss and supporting the Natura 2000 network.
  • Circular Economy and Quality of Life: Aimed at reducing waste, improving resource efficiency, air and water quality, and protecting and improving the environment in general.
  • Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: Aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing resilience to climate change and addressing areas such as agriculture, land use and urban adaptation.
  • Clean Energy Transition: Supports the shift towards renewable energy and greater energy efficiency, contributing to the implementation of key policies such as the European Green Pact.

Key Details of the LIFE 2025 Call: What You Need to Know Now

  • Opening of the Call: 24 April 2025
  • Total Budget: EUR 600 million.
  • Key Deadlines: The main deadline for many types of projects relevant for researchers, such as the Standard Action Projects (SAP) on Circular Economy, Environmental Governance, Nature and Biodiversity, Climate Change Adaptation, as well as the Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) for Clean Energy Transition and some Technical Assistance (TA) grants, is 23 September 2025. There are other deadlines for different types of projects (such as the concept notes for SIP/SNAPs on 4 September 2025), so it is essential to consult the official portal.
  • Where to Find All Information: The EU Funding & Tender Opportunities Portal is the official and definitive source for all call documents, detailed descriptions of funding topics, specific eligibility rules and application forms. The launch notice and related links can be accessed here.
  • Types of Projects: The most common types for researchers tend to be SAPs (standard projects pursuing specific programme objectives) and CSAs (support actions for capacity building, dissemination, awareness raising, especially in Clean Energy). There are other types such as Strategic Integrated Projects (SIPs), Strategic Nature Projects (SNAPs) and Technical Assistance (TA) with their own characteristics and timeframe.
